Artist's Statement

"I find inspiration from the figure, the energy of movement and character of expression which they can portray. Sculptural form has always fascinated me. I find the human body particularly challenging and engaging. We are capable of such a diverse range of shapes, stances, gestures and expressions. One reason for my focus is the emotive nature of people; the empathy that arises and can be conveyed. Exploring this with models whom I know well allows development both of their true character/ personality and also any distortion of this that I may superimpose. Sonia, a nine -year old girl, is the inspiration behind this painting, which originated from the expressive face, glowing with brilliant orange light. The paint quality of this area (sparse and lean) lends to the vibrancy. The outstretched arm was added to increase the dynamics and to enhance the sense of movement that I was seeking"
