About this site

About this site
Home
This website was produced as part of the Digital History for Preston Schools project, which was funded by the DfEE Museums and Galleries Education Programme.

It offers children the opportunity to develop their ICT skills whilst learning about the history and geography of their local area. The interactive elements of the website also ensure students can improve literacy and numeracy and develop other lifelong skills. It provides useful and enjoyable National Curriculum content for children at Key Stages 2 and 3.

The website is based on the history of the cotton industry in Preston and its effect on Preston and its inhabitants. It also uses the history of the Horrockses company in Preston as a specific case study. The website draws primarily on the collections held by the Harris Museum and research compiled from the collections of the Harris Reference Library and Lancashire County Record Office.

The website was produced by the Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston, which is section of the Community, Regeneration and Leisure Services department of Preston Borough Council.

The historical research for the website was undertaken by Dr Alan Crosby and Emma Heslewood, Keeper of Social History. Additional research and development of the content of the site was also undertaken by Lisa Watson and Peter Rix, Education Officers at the Harris Museum and Art Gallery.

The website was developed and tested in partnership with teachers from the following Preston schools:

  • Christ the King High School
  • St Ignatius RC Primary School
  • Moor Park County High School
  • Deepdale County Junior School
  • Sherwood County Primary School

We would like to take this opportunity like to thank all the contributors, teachers and advisors involved in the project, particularly from CLEO, the Lancashire Professional Development Service and Lancashire Schools' ICT Centre.
