This picture shows the many growth stages of the cotton plant. Cotton plants from different countries produced cotton of different qualities. The best type of cotton had the longest fibre or staple, produced when the cotton was stretched. The longest staple was produced by cotton grown in the West Indies, followed by Egypt, America and India.
