The Yard Works in 1913

During the next 100 years the Yard Works grew to fill the area of land bordered by Church Street, Stanley Street, Queens Street and Grimshaw Street. A perimeter wall was constructed around the site as well as a new entrance to the works on Stanley Street. In 1913 the Yard Works provided employment for thousands of people processing, spinning and weaving cotton. When King George V and Queen Mary visited on 8 July 1913 they were shown over 400 samples of cotton cloth each with different designs. A model of the Yard Works was also made for this royal visit and is on display in the Harris Museum and Art Gallery. In 1913 Horrockses cloth was world famous.
