During
the next 100 years the Yard Works grew to fill the area of land bordered
by Church Street, Stanley Street, Queens Street and Grimshaw Street. A
perimeter wall was constructed around the site as well as a new entrance
to the works on Stanley Street. In 1913 the Yard Works provided employment
for thousands of people processing, spinning and weaving cotton. When
King George V and Queen Mary visited on 8 July 1913 they were shown over
400 samples of cotton cloth each with different designs. A model of the
Yard Works was also made for this royal visit and is on display in the
Harris Museum and Art Gallery. In 1913 Horrockses cloth was world famous.
