1816 The government investigates child labour in Preston

Fishwick Mill, Preston.

Fishwick Mill, Preston.

On 6 June 1816 the committee investigating the state of children employed in cotton factories interviewed William Taylor and John Swainson. William Taylor was manager of a spinning mill belonging to Horrocks, Miller and Company in Preston. John Swainson was owner of Fishwick Mill also in Preston. The records from the report clearly show that a large number of children were working in Preston mills. Their working day was between 12 and 13 ½ hours.

A transcript of the report with the questions and answers received from Taylor and Swainson is available in the database for comparison.
