1822 Preston Guild
The Guild of 1822 was the last held by the 'old' borough council. In 1835 parliament passed a law that changed local government and abolished many of the ancient privileges of the town.
The cotton trades organised a spectacular show in the processions of 1822. The floats pulled along the streets included working looms and steam engines. The greatest event of this Guild was Preston's first hot-air balloon ascent. This involved Mr. Livingston, who took off in his balloon from a piece of open land, where the St George's shopping Centre is today. |
