Horrockses 1768 - 1960

1791 John Horrocks moves to Preston and the company is founded

The Yellow Factory, c.1910.

In January 1791, John Horrocks bought a small building in Turks Head Court, Preston. Here he set up his own carding machines. John then took the carded cotton to Edgworth where his sisters spun yarn. He then brought the yarn back to Preston and gave it to handloom weavers so he could sell the cotton cloth himself.

Later in 1791, John Horrocks built his own spinning factory in Dale Street, Preston. It was the first mill to be built on what was to become the Yard Works site. The factory was later called the Yellow Factory because of the colour of the white wash, which the factory was painted.

At first the spinning machinery in the Yellow Factory was powered by a jig-wheel, which was turned by a horse in the cellar. When steam power and larger mule spinning machines were introduced the Yellow Factory was no longer used for spinning and was probably a warehouse. It was demolished sometime during World War II. The date stone from the Yellow Factory is now in the collection of the Harris Museum and Art Gallery.
