Horrockses 1768 - 1960

1792 Between 1792 and 1799 John Horrocks builds six spinning mills

Moss Mill

Moss Mill on Fylde Road in Preston is the only mill built by John Horrocks that still stand today.

In 1792, the Yard Factory was the second mill to be built by John Horrocks on what was to become the Yard Works site. The Old Moss and Frenchwood factories in Preston and Stone Mill in Edgeworth, followed this in 1796. Moss Mill was built in 1797 and the Canal Factory in 1799. Houses with basement workshops for handloom weavers grew up around the new spinning mills so they could take the yarn produced by the mills and weave cloth for John Horrocks to sell.
