1733 John Kay invents the flying shuttle ![]() This is a typical shuttle, which was used, in the 19th century. John Kay invented the flying shuttle for weaving with wool. It is a device, made of wood, which carries yarn through the warp threads during weaving. In the 1760's weavers using cotton began using the shuttle to produce cloth. This doubled the weaver's speed and made cloth cheaper to produce. A cotton weaver could also make much wider cloth on Kay's machine. Close this Window |
