Thomas Miller, 1862

Thomas Miller was born in Golden Square, near the entrance to the Yard Works, on 15 February 1811. Thomas followed his father, becoming a managing partner in Horrocks, Miller and Company, cotton spinners and manufacturers in 1836.

In 1845 he married a niece of John Horrocks and built a house in 5 Winckley Square. The house can still be seen today.

From 1846 after the death of Samuel Horrocks he became chief partner in the company.

In 1864 he gave land to the town on which to build a park which became known as Miller Park. At the time of his death in 1865, he was by far the richest of Preston's cotton manufacturers. He was also one of the greatest art collectors Preston has ever known.
