Postcard showing new market place 1910

This postcard shows the covered market and the open air market besides it.
It dates around 1910

For centuries Preston had had a large open-air market, which was held on the Market Square. By the 1860s the market was too small and crowded. It was also exposed to the weather.

The new covered market, with its great roof supported on cast-iron columns, was opened in 1871. Today it is still in constant use and is one of Preston's finest Victorian buildings. For many years it was well known for its annual cheese fairs. Preston market was an essential source of fresh food, including vegetables, for the poor and the working classes.
