1878 Preston North End football team is founded
Preston North End Team, 1892-1893
In 1878 members of the Preston North End cricket team, who played cricket during the summer on Moor Park, began to play football during winter. This was the beginning of Preston North End Football team.
During the 1860s new parks were built in Preston such as Moor Park, Avenham Park and Miller Park. Cricket, football, walking, cycling and rowing became very popular. When working hours were shortened in the 1870s cotton workers had a little more free time for leisure activities. Football was one of the first organised sports available to the working classes. Watching Preston North End also became very popular. The town and its workers were intensely proud of the team - as they still are!
