1775 American War of Independence begins

The American War of Independence lasted seven years. Britain was defeated by the American army and lost control of the American colony. In 1783 the United States of America was recognised as an independent country. Britain began to develop colonies elsewhere in the world. Meanwhile, the United States began to develop its economy. After the war, cotton seed was imported into North America. It was grown on plantations in southern states like Georgia and South Carolina using slave labour. American cotton was imported into Britain on an extensive scale after 1790. However, most of the raw cotton imported into Britain was from India.
