1815 Britain dominates world trade
Despite the effects of the Napoleonic Wars, Britain was in 1815 the
earliest and the greatest industrial power in the world. No other country
in Europe had an industrial base comparable to that of Britain. Britain
was the largest producer of textiles, coal and iron in Europe. In 1815,
Britain imported 90 million lbs. of raw cotton (over 40 million kg).
This was used to manufacture cotton cloth in Lancashire towns like Preston.
60% of the cotton cloth made in Britain in 1815 was exported to Europe
and the rest of the world.
