1842 Britain acquires Hong Kong

In 1842 after a short war with China Britain seized the barren rocky island of Hong Kong, on the southern Chinese coast. Hong Kong developed into a major trading port and naval base where British goods were traded to China and other Far Eastern countries. The Hong Kong market was of special significance to cotton manufacturers like Horrockses of Preston who in the early 20th century gave a lot of attention to building up and maintaining this trade.
