1853 Europe begins to trade with Japan

In 1853 the Japanese government allowed foreign ships to enter Japanese ports and begin limited trading. Within thirty years Japan became a major market for European industrial and commercial firms who were eager to sell their goods and also their technology. By 1900, Japan was buying textile machinery from Platts of Oldham. However, Japanese companies like Toyoda Loom Works, soon developed their own weaving machinery. The automatic loom developed by Toyoda was quicker than the Lancashire loom and required fewer workers.
