1853 Europe begins to trade with Japan In
1853 the Japanese government allowed foreign ships to enter Japanese
ports and begin limited trading. Within thirty years Japan became a
major market for European industrial and commercial firms who were eager
to sell their goods and also their technology. By 1900, Japan was buying
textile machinery from Platts of Oldham. However, Japanese companies
like Toyoda Loom Works, soon developed their own weaving machinery.
The automatic loom developed by Toyoda was quicker than the Lancashire
loom and required fewer workers.
