1865 Suez Canal opens

This label was made for one of Horrockses main rival, John Goodhair.
John Goodhair made cotton cloth in Preston.
It was exported to India via the Suez Canal.

The Suez Canal linked the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea. Before it was built, ships carrying goods to and from India and South East Asia had to sail around the southern tip of Africa. Once the Suez Canal was open it gave ships a quicker route between Europe and Asia. Trade between Britain and Asia increased. British industries supplied manufactured goods to the Indian sub-continent. Lancashire's cotton industry became heavily dependent on the Indian market, and this represented one of the main trading areas for firms such as Horrockses of Preston.
