1870 Unification of Germany

During the 18th century many of the smaller German states united peacefully with others and the larger states, such as Prussia, Saxony and Bavaria, began to expand, taking over neighbouring states. In 1870 this process was completed when 350 states were finally united together. The new country, Germany was the largest and potentially the most powerful in Europe. Germany exploited its coal and iron reserves, built railways and by the late 1880s established new industries, among them cotton manufacturing. These industries began to compete with Britain and by 1900 had eroded Britain's dominance in the world economy.
