Growing political tensions across Europe erupted into war in August 1914. The First World War lasted for over four years and was devastating in its impact. Millions of people died in battle or lost their lives elsewhere. Civilians were caught up in the fighting and many millions of others died of disease and hunger. The naval war and German blockade of Britain also affected Europe's economy and dominance of world trade. After the war many Lancashire cotton manufacturers found it difficult to compete with countries like Japan and the United States. During the 1920s and 1930s most of the Far Eastern and Indian markets were buying cotton cloth from Japan.
