The Second World War lasted until 1945. It had a devastating effect on world trade. Rationing was introduced in Britain, limiting the food and clothing that people could buy. During the Second World War Lancashire cotton mills were kept busy making utility cloth, which was used to make simple plain cotton clothing, sheets and pillowcases. After the war the world economy was no longer dominated by Europe. Many of the traditional British industries like cotton manufacturing began to decline rapidly. The attempts to modernise after the war were too late to stop the closures of mills in the 1960's.
