ICT Excellence Awards 2010

|

ICT Excellence Awards – now open for entries!

Is your school or organisation making a huge difference with technology? Is ICT transforming the way that learners learn, parents communicate and staff work?  If so, then Becta wants to hear from you!

Now entering their fifth year, Becta’s ICT Excellence Awards provide a great opportunity to not only celebrate the amazing work of schools, local authorities and other supporting organisations but to share the experiences of those at the forefront of the use of technology in learning.

The awards are positioned as the fourth and final stage of Becta’s Next Generation Learning Charter.

Awards categories

All categories are closely aligned with elements of Becta’s Self-review framework and the ICT Mark for schools.  The categories are:

Best whole school – for those schools who are using ICT innovatively to transform practice across all their activities.  To be awarded regionally, with an overall national winner.

Learning experience – incorporating learning, teaching, curriculum and assessment.

Beyond the school – including how the schools extend learning opportunities beyond the “standard” school experience.  This will include how it engages with parents and others and how it offers access to learning in the home and in other locations.

Leadership, management and collaboration – looking at how a school creates and implements a vision and strategy for ICT and how it supports other schools in their strategic use of ICT.

Support for schools – looking at how an external organisation (both local authorities and others) can support schools in their implementation and development of ICT.

The awards are open to all schools, local authorities and supporting organisations across the whole of the UK and in Service Children’s Education settings overseas.

If you want to share your story or that of a school or organisation that you know, the ICT Excellence Awards 2010 are now open for entries.  For more information on the categories and criteria, and to access the online entry forms, go to www.becta.org.uk/excellenceawards.  The deadline for entries is 24 March 2010.

Brainiest School in Britain Competition

|

ARE YOU THE BRAINIEST SCHOOL IN BRITAIN?

SIGN UP FOR FIRST EVER ONLINE NATIONAL SCHOOLS QUIZ!

- Primary schools across the nation encouraged to take the challenge in the Next Generation Learning National Schools Quiz-

Becta, the Government’s agency for technology in education, and the NEN (National Education Network) are launching the first ever nationwide online schools quiz, which will see thousands of primary school children up and down the country compete simultaneously in this pioneering, interactive competition.

Schools entering the Next Generation Learning National Schools Quiz, which will take place on Friday 12th March, could win up to £3,000 worth of ICT equipment or training for their school, plus there are fantastic spot prizes for successful individuals and teams who take part.

The quiz will run exclusively online, via the NEN, covering curriculum areas, including history, science, citizenship, numeracy and literacy. Questions will be provided by a series of high profile national partners who include the Historic Royal Palaces, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Guide Dogs for the Blind, and the relevant subject associations.

The nationwide quiz is aimed at Key Stage 2 and open to pupils aged eight and nine years old. Schools can sign up individual pupils or teams by registering now at www.nen.gov.uk/nsq.

Each partner has compiled a series of fun and challenging tests which will pit pupils from across the UK against one another so they can see, in real time, which is the brainiest school in Britain. Every pupil will immediately be awarded gold, silver or bronze certificates, depending on their performance, with one school awarded the star prize of £3,000 worth of ICT equipment.

As further incentive, every school signing up to take part in the Next Generation Learning National Schools Quiz will automatically achieve level 1 of the Next Generation Learning Charter, a charter established by Becta stating its public commitment to embrace technology in learning.

Stephen Crowne, Chief Executive of Becta, said:

“We are delighted to launch the first ever online National Schools Quiz and hope to see thousands of pupils across the country taking part in this groundbreaking initiative. Becta believes that integrating technology across the entire curriculum is essential to making lessons and learning more enjoyable and rewarding and this is just one great example of how technology can be used to inspire learners.”

“We have got some fantastic partners onboard who have developed a really compelling quiz so if you think your school has what it takes to win then visit www.nextgenerationlearning.org.uk/nsq and pledge your commitment to Next Generation Learning.”

Karen Davies, Head of Museums’ Learning Resources at the Science Museum, said:

“At the Science Museum in London we are known for our innovative, ‘hands on, minds on’ approach to learning.  We are pleased to support Becta in experimenting with new ways of engaging young people and exploring the potential of new technologies.”

ArtisanCam Launches Spectacular New Activity!

|

PhotoShoot is probably the most ambitious learning activity produced by ArtisanCam. It presents the user with the challenge of;

¨ operating a virtual DSLR camera,

¨ controlling shutter speed and aperture setting,

¨ zooming and focussing on green screened footage of a professional dancer superimposed on a chosen landscape,

¨ taking the picture at the critical moment

¨ selecting the best image to send to a picture editor for professional judgement.

A Virtual Editor gives detailed feedback based on the parameters the user has chosen to take the picture.  Photoshoot gives an insight into the science behind photography, imparting an understanding of the cause-and-effect relationship between the settings on a sophisticated camera and  the resulting pictures.

Photoshoot makes a perfect preparation for the change up from the limitation of a point-and-shoot camera to the challenge of  a more demanding instrument.

You may recognise the featured dancer, Wendy Hesketh of Wired Aerial Theatre, last seen on ArtisanCam dancing thirty metres up the side of a building in Liverpool during Kevin Clifford’s ArtisanCam residency

Lancashire Sinfonietta

“Delights of the Danube” – Alfie Boe performs with the Lancashire Sinfonietta.

This month Tenor Alfie Boe returns to his hometown of Fleetwood for a series of open rehearsals, concerts, Video Conferences and Webcasts with an orchestra of home-grown musicians, the Lancashire Sinfonietta.

Alfie Boe is certainly a Tenor with a difference! He has emerged in recent years as one of the UK’s finest classical artists following a colourful few years spent honing his craft in the Royal Opera House and on Broadway.

The Lancashire Sinfonietta will offer a special live Webcast from Alfie’s old school in Fleetwood as part of their aim to help deliver the “Daily Hour of Culture” target for schools.

Pupils and teachers are eager to hear their former pupil’s amazing voice and in addition to the live audience, his rehearsal will be watched by schools all around the UK via Webcast. Students will learn about the processes of preparing for an orchestral concert and an interactive Video Conference afterwards will give students the chance to chat with Alfie and ask questions.

This event launches the Lancashire Sinfonietta’s first series of webcasts and video conferences via CLEO (Cumbria & Lancashire Education Online), part of the NEN (National Education Network), the online broadband service for UK schools.

The concerts, which follow a musical journey down the Danube, feature Boe performing alongside other stunning Lancastrians from the UK’s top orchestras who make up the Lancashire Sinfonietta. The violinist/director Bradley Creswick will also be joined by the virtuoso gypsy cimbalom player, Kálmán Balogh, who is flying in from Budapest specially for the concerts.

The live Webcast will be on Thursday 13th March 2008.

New Video conference available from The Beacon Museum, Cumbria

This series of special sessions running throughout March has been designed to commemorate the bicentenary of the Abolition of the British Trade in Enslaved People on 25th March 1807 and help schools deliver the topic of slavery in the classroom. The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven are providing an interactive session where children will explore the triangular trade across the Atlantic and meet an abolitionist from the 19th century who explains the transatlantic slave trade, recalls life before the Abolition Act in 1807 and explores what happened afterwards because slavery did not vanish overnight.  Children will explore the products traded, the conditions for slaves during transit across the Atlantic, learn about slaves for sale on the plantations and help our campaigner write an abolition speech. Genuine and replica artefacts will be used along with documents from the Cumbria Record Office to demonstrate the role of Whitehaven and Cumbria in the slave trade.  The session will end with a consideration of modern-day slavery issues.  Making the News Competition 2006

Last year three CLEO schools won prizes in this exciting competition and this year there are even more categories where budding journalists and media bloggers can showcase their talents.  Prizes will be awarded at BETT 2007 on Wednesday 10 January.

The competition has been designed by the RBCs (Regional Broadband Consortia, of which CLEO is one) to support lesson activity while encouraging enhanced, extended creative learning experiences.  There are three age bands to give pupils of all ages equal chance to shine in their chosen category:

  • 10 and Under
  • 11 to 14 Years
  • 15 and Above.

There are 10 categories:

·         Best local news story

·         Best feature on any topic

·         Best personal story

·         Best food report

·         Best field trip

·         Best environmental story

·         Best overseas report

·         Best ICT story

·         Best music report

·         Best education story.

Because of the exciting multimedia nature of Making the News, competition winners will need to demonstrate prowess with one or more of a variety of media:

  • News stories (text and images)
  • Interviews (text, audio, video)
  • Animation
  • Music

If you would like to sign up for Making the News (it’s free) visit www.cleo.net.uk and follow the link This Term on CLEO or contact the CLEO Project Office.

Using Making the News offers learners many benefits including increased confidence, improved research and communication skills and collating and presenting information at a professional standard.  Seeing their work published online also provides a real sense of purpose which is motivational and adds to pupils’ enthusiasm and imagination. Many schools already work with local TV, newspapers and radio and we hope that more will join them to learn from their expertise and explore the world of the Media.

Read Around the Planet

|

Read Around the Planet*

TWICE Videoconference Event

English: March 1-2, 5- 7

World Languages: March 9

Read Around the Planet is a celebration of NEA’s Read Across America. Classrooms use interactive video to connect with other classrooms “around the planet” and read to each other. The activity is sponsored by TWICE and Polycom, in cooperation with NEA.

TWICE provides the registration tool, matches classrooms with partners, and provides support documents. Participating classrooms are responsible for their own video connection and developing their own reading activities for the event.

How To Participate

This activity is open to students ages 6-18. To participate schools must be registered with the JANET Videoconferencing Service (JVCS) and have access to two-way interactive video equipment (ISDN H.320 or IP H.323).  If you are unsure whether or not you have access to this type of equipment, check with your school's IT department. They may also be able to inform you if you are registered with JVCS. To check if you are registered with JVCS contact your RBC, regional IT support, or Tim Boundy at UKERNA (details below).

Your class will be matched with a class from a different location and each class will exchange reading activities. Classroom to classroom connections in English will take place March 1-2 and 3-5, 2007. Classroom to classroom connections in other languages will take place March 9, 2007. Activities in the UK will probably take place in the afternoons as time zone differences mean that in early March 2pm in the UK will be 9am on the US east coast.

Each connection is scheduled for an hour: 15 minutes for testing connections and introductions; 30 minutes for the reading activity (15 minutes per class); and 15 minutes for exchanging information about respective schools and communities. Activities can range from reading a favourite book passage, to dramatisations, to cartoon strips, to a “battle of the books” format - see the web pages for more details: www.twice.cc/read .

Activity Timeline

November 1-22, 2006: Verification process occurs. Quality Assurance (QA) checks with JVCS.

December 1, 2006: Match Request Registration Opens
