Housing Your CLEO Connection

Unfortunately CLEO is not able to provide a data cabinet for your CLEO connection. However the following provides some guidance on what you should consider if you are planning to install one.

Wall Mounted Cabinet (provided by the school)

A wall mounted cabinet (otherwise known as a comms cabinet) provides an ideal installation point for your new CLEO connection equipment keeping network or communications equipment secure and out of danger. Their solid-steel construction with a steel wall mounted hinged back panel supports many rack mount applications.

The front door features a shatterproof, smoked glass and a safety lock. Jointed steel plates on the top and bottom make it easy to run cables in and out of the cabinet.

CLEO would suggest the minimum cabinet size of 15U. A “U” number is an industrial standard for IT networking equipment and usually indicates the number of devices which will fit into the cabinet based on all the devices being the same height i.e. 1U or 42mm. If space and funds allow, always install the largest cabinet you can accommodate as this will future proof the installation somewhat. Always install cabinets that have a minimum depth of 495mm.

Please note: if your CLEO cache server is installed in your existing cabinet, CLEO engineers may move it onto the top of the cabinet or a shelf next to it.

Typical Dimensions

Width:

  • Outside:599mm;  Usable Space: 550mm

Height:

  • 12U: Outside: 614mm; Usable Space: 537m
  • 15U: Outside: 717mm; Usable Space: 670mm
  • 18U: Outside: 881mm; Usable Space: 804mm

(Larger versions are available, however we would suggest they be situated at ground level rather than being mounted on a wall)

Depth:

  • 50cm: Outside: 500mm; 455mm

The base of the cabinet once installed, must not be greater than 2 meters above ground level. This is to ensure the installation and any ongoing work to equipment within the cabinet conforms to British Health & Safety Executive working rules.

Health and Safety

Important - All data communications cabinets must be earthed. Please check any existing cabinets before CLEO engineers arrive.

A typical installation once the CLEO equipment has been installed may look like this.

Router / Switch (Ready to be installed within the cabinet)

Equipment in these cabinets must not be powered via a multiway power adapter. It is always better
to have at least two switched power sockets installed on a separate fused spur to all the other site equipment by a qualified electrician. If multiple sockets are required, either have these installed onto the same spur by an electrician or purchase a rack mounted power adapter that can provide 8 or more sockets to devices within the cabinet.

Future Building Works

Please note: If your school is due to have any building works carried out in the future it is important to consider the location of your new CLEO equipment and / or BT point carefully.

Unfortunately, CLEO requires a minimum of 1 months notice to move equipment, including wireless and copper links. In order to move a fibre connection we require a minimum of 3 months notice.

All equipment and connection moves are a charged service – please contact the CLEO Project office well in advance for a quote.
